Rome (Italy) - Pope Francis (86) wanted to be the first pontiff to participate in an international climate conference. But now he has canceled his trip for health reasons!
The head of the Catholic Church had initially planned to fly to the Arab Emirate of Dubai from Friday to Sunday and give a speech at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference COP28 on Saturday. However, on Tuesday evening, his spokesman Matteo Bruni surprisingly announced that doctors had asked the Pope not to make the trip. Bruni continued: "Pope Francis has accepted the doctors' request with great regret, and the trip has therefore been canceled."
However, the Pope and the Holy See are still prepared to participate in the discussions in the coming days. The UN Climate Change Conference opens on Thursday and is scheduled to last until December 12.
Is the Pope seriously ill?
Francis has been struggling with his health for some time. He has already been treated in hospital twice this year, first because of pneumonia. Later, he had to undergo open abdominal surgery under general anesthesia.
According to the Vatican, the 86-year-old has been suffering from mild flu and inflammation in his lungs and respiratory tract since last weekend. The Argentinean has already had to cancel appointments, hold the traditional Angelus prayer from his residence, and have a priest read many parts of his address. Francis appeared exhausted, was coughing, and had to be treated intravenously with antibiotics.
Initially, it was unclear whether the Pope would now be connected to the UN Climate Change Conference via video for his speech or whether something else was planned.
