In a solemn announcement, Buckingham Palace revealed that King Charles, at the age of 75, is undergoing treatment for cancer. The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed, aside from a confirmation that it is not prostate cancer. This news follows recent treatments the monarch received for an enlarged prostate, during which the tumor was detected at a hospital in London.
The palace's statement conveyed a note of concern, stating, "During the King's recent hospital treatment for benign prostate enlargement, another problem was identified that is of concern." It further elaborated, "Subsequent diagnostic tests detected a form of cancer. His Majesty began a program of regular treatments today. The doctors have advised him not to perform public duties during this time."
On January 29th, the King left the London clinic where he was being treated for his prostate, along with Queen Camilla.
Despite the gravity of his health situation, King Charles has chosen not to let this diagnosis hinder his work. The palace shared, "During this time, His Majesty will carry out state affairs and official paperwork as usual." It also highlighted the King's optimistic outlook towards his treatment and eagerness to resume public duties, stating, "Charles remains completely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public service as soon as possible."
Leading politicians in the United Kingdom are already sending encouraging words to their monarch. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote on the X platform, "I wish His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I do not doubt that he will soon be back to full strength, and I know that the whole country wishes him well."
