Talks Collapse: U.S.–Iran Deal Falls Apart
Islamabad — After nearly a full day of high-stakes negotiations, the latest round of U.S.–Iran peace talks ended without a breakthrough, underscoring just how fragile the diplomatic path remains between the two longtime adversaries.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that no agreement had been reached following roughly 21 hours of discussions held in Islamabad, where Pakistani officials had been mediating the talks since the weekend. The Vice President, speaking to reporters before departing, cited a lack of progress and said Iran’s leadership had not accepted key U.S. conditions.
At the center of the impasse was Washington’s demand for clear and explicit assurances that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities. According to Vance, the U.S. presented what he described as a “simple” and “final” proposal — one he characterized as flexible but firm on core security concerns.
Throughout the marathon negotiations, Vance remained in close communication with Donald Trump, along with senior officials including Marco Rubio, Scott Bessent, and U.S. Central Command leadership. The American delegation also included Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner.
“We negotiated in good faith,” Vance said, emphasizing that the United States is leaving the table with what it considers its best and final offer still on the table. He did not confirm whether additional talks are scheduled, leaving the immediate future of negotiations uncertain.
Conflicting signals emerged from the Iranian side, with state media suggesting discussions may still be ongoing. However, no official confirmation of continued talks has been issued by U.S. officials.
The collapse — or pause — in negotiations comes at a tense moment in the region, where broader security concerns and ongoing conflicts continue to complicate diplomacy. For now, both sides appear to be stepping back, with the possibility of renewed talks hanging in the balance.
