Shots Fired at White House Correspondents' Dinner: Trump Safe, Shooter Arrested
Washington, D.C. — Gunfire shattered the elegant evening at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday, forcing President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump into swift evacuation as Secret Service agents rushed them to safety.
The chaos erupted shortly after Trump stepped onto the stage to restrained applause and the national anthem concluded. Loud bangs echoed near the ballroom, triggering screams as hundreds of attendees dove under tables or fled the room. Melania Trump, visibly alarmed, was escorted offstage moments later.
“The shooter has been arrested,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “The Secret Service and law enforcement have done a fantastic job. They have acted quickly and courageously.” He later described the suspect as a “lone wolf” and “a very sick person.”
The alleged gunman was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. A Caltech graduate with a background in mechanical engineering, Allen had worked as a tutor and was once named “Teacher of the Month” at a local C2 Education center. He was apprehended alive near a security checkpoint outside the ballroom after authorities say he opened fire while armed with a shotgun, handgun, and additional weapons. He was transported to Howard University Hospital for evaluation.
One police officer was struck in his bulletproof vest but is expected to recover fully. No other injuries were reported. Trump and the First Lady were unharmed, as was Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was also safely evacuated.
Organizers immediately canceled the remainder of the dinner. Trump had initially hoped to continue the program, saying “the show must go on,” but deferred to law enforcement. The event is expected to be rescheduled within the next 30 days. The president later held a White House press conference to brief the nation.
Attendees later described security as surprisingly lax, noting that many guests were admitted with only a screenshot of their invitation and no ID verification, despite visible protests outside the Hilton.
Law enforcement praised the rapid response that contained the threat. The FBI and Secret Service have launched a joint investigation, though no motive has been released and no additional threats have been identified.
This is a developing story.
