Ferrari is back!
No sooner has the drivers' championship been decided than Ferrari suddenly revs up. Carlos Sainz Jr. (27) grabs pole position for the US Grand Prix in Austin (Sunday, 9 p.m. / Sky) with a time of 1:14.356 minutes. Team-mate Charles Leclerc (24) qualifies in second place directly behind him – but he has to start from 12th place due to a grid penalty.
In the previous race in Japan, Max Verstappen (24) in the Red Bull secured his second world title, mathematically one that Leclerc could no longer catch up with
Qualifying was overshadowed by the death of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, which was announced shortly before the start of the session.
Mick Schumacher (23) is unlucky in the first qualifying and only drives the 19th fastest time. In one of his laps, he made a mistake at the exit of the first corner, briefly lost control of his car, and was able to continue after a 360-degree spin but lost a lot of time.
Team-mate Kevin Magnussen (30) didn't make it to the next lap either, qualified on P16, and started from P15. Sebastian Vettel (35) secured 10th place on the grid with the twelfth fastest time, due to two grid place penalties.
