DLNews Sport:
They are world champions - for Dietrich Mateschitz (†78)!
Max Verstappen (25) wins the U.S. Grand Prix and Red Bull the Constructors' World Championship. Just last race, Verstappen was crowned driver's champion in Japan, and now his racing team also takes its second title for the first time since 2013.
Red Bull dedicates this title to the man without whom the racing team's success would never have been possible: Dietrich Mateschitz. Only on Saturday, the founder of the Red Bull beverage empire and the two racing teams, Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri passed away at age 78.
Verstappen radioed after crossing the finish line, "This one was for Dietrich!"
From the start, it is clear at the "Circuit Of The Americas" in Austin: this race is being held in memory of the man who left such a mark on Formula 1.
In the Red Bull garage, the founder's favorite songs are playing loudly, and a video commemorates him before the start. Lined up on the grid are the drivers he turned into stars with his development program for young drivers.
One of them: is Verstappen. Right at the start, he snatches the lead from Carlos Sainz (28) in the Ferrari. Another dominant performance by the Dutchman and his 13th victory. - He equaled the record set by Michael Schumacher (53) in 2004 and Sebastian Vettel (35) in 2013.
A minor blemish: In the meantime, Verstappen falls behind, and a pit stop takes significantly too long due to a striking impact wrench - 11.1 seconds! "Yes, wonderful," grumbles the Dutchman on the radio. But he reclaims first place anyway.
Another Red Bull junior driver, Vettel, had a strong race and finished eighth. And that's even though his pit stop was a complete failure. So there was even more in it.
Mick Schumacher (23) could make up a few places after his failed qualifying (he only finished 19th on Saturday), but he still only finished 15th. Also, his team was again wrong with the pit stop strategy. Mick was on course for points!
But both are only a marginal note. Red Bull is the world champion. And this title belongs to Mateschitz!
