The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the release of tax documents of ex-President Donald Trump (76) to a congressional committee.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a request by Trump's lawyers to halt the transmission of the tax documents. The Republicans had resisted the release of the documents for years through legal channels.
Now he failed before the highest court in the land!
Contrary to the usual practice in the U.S., Trump, a real estate entrepreneur, had not made his tax returns public either as a presidential candidate or after he entered the White House.
Trump was the first president since Richard Nixon (1969-1974) to refuse disclosure. So naturally, this led to speculation that he had something to hide.
During the 2020 campaign, The New York Times reported that Trump had paid no federal income tax in 11 of the 18 years between 2000 and 2017 - and only $750 in each of 2016 and 2017.
A week ago, Trump announced he wanted to run again as a presidential candidate. But whether the Republicans actually put him up in 2024 is an open question. The most formidable opponent is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (44). However, he has not yet committed himself to a candidacy.
