The Economist Asking: What If Capitalism Was Built Wrong?
The global economy isn’t exactly having a smooth ride—climate pressure is mounting, inequality keeps widening, and public trust is wearing thin. Now, a growing number of economists are asking a bold question: what if the system itself needs a redesign?
Enter Mariana Mazzucato.
The University College London professor has become one of the most talked-about voices in modern economics, not for predicting markets—but for challenging how they’re built. In her latest book, The Common Good Economy, she argues that governments shouldn’t just fix problems after the fact—they should help shape markets from the start.
It’s a shift from cleanup to construction.
Mazzucato’s earlier work on the “entrepreneurial state” already stirred debate by highlighting how public investment helped fuel innovations like the internet and biotech. Now, she’s pushing further, calling for a system where public and private sectors work together with clear, shared goals—think climate solutions, long-term growth, and economic resilience.
Supporters say it’s a smarter, more proactive approach in a world where markets alone haven’t solved big challenges. Critics warn that giving governments a stronger steering role could come with political baggage and inefficiencies.
So where does she land? Often labeled progressive, Mazzucato doesn’t reject capitalism—she wants to rebuild it with purpose.
And in today’s uncertain economy, that idea is gaining traction faster than many expected.
