The US Senate approved the temporary funding measure with 65 votes in favor and 35 opposed. The House voted 254-175, with a large majority of Republicans voting against the legislation.
The US fiscal year begins on October 1, and President Biden signed the bill just hours before the midnight deadline. But, though they joined forces to keep the lights on, the two parties are still at odds over the issue of raising the debt ceiling – which will come to a head sometime in mid-October – as well as a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill and the $3.5 trillion spending bill the Democrats are trying to pass without any Republican votes.
