Sanchez Takes Helm of Cathedral City Police

Rick Sanchez was sworn in as Cathedral City’s police chief Tuesday, Sept. 8, marking a new chapter for a longtime department veteran and a historic first for the community.

The ceremony at City Hall formally welcomed the department’s first Latino chief, who now leads the agency serving more than 52,000 residents. Sanchez had served as acting chief since former Chief George Crum retired in December 2025.

City Manager Andrew Firestine selected Sanchez following a national recruitment process that included public participation. Residents offered feedback through a survey available in English and Spanish, helping shape the leadership qualifications sought by the city. Interview panel members represented civic leadership, community organizations and law enforcement.

Sanchez brings nearly two decades of experience with the Cathedral City Police Department. He joined the department in 2006, working assignments that included patrol, gang enforcement, investigations and SWAT. His service included 13 years with Desert Regional SWAT, where he also held a team leadership role.

As he advanced through the ranks, Sanchez supervised patrol officers, detectives and professional standards functions. He later became a commander and then deputy chief, overseeing operations, investigations and support services.

His preparation also includes a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from California State University, San Bernardino, and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from California Coast University.

For residents, Sanchez’s stated priorities center on public trust, accountability and stronger community partnerships. He has emphasized professionalism, transparency and innovation while building on the department’s existing foundation.

In his department welcome message, Sanchez also stresses listening to residents and businesses, supporting employee training and maintaining open communication. Those commitments frame his approach as he takes permanent leadership of an agency he has helped serve for much of his career.
