PSP Wins $21.55 Million to Upgrade Baggage System
Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) has landed a $21.55 million Federal Aviation Administration grant to kickstart construction of its new baggage handling system, the airport’s top priority as it keeps breaking passenger records.
The funding, announced by U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, is part of $158.4 million distributed to 72 California airports through the FAA’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program. Combined with a competitive $6 million FAA award last year, PSP has now secured more than $27 million toward the $86 million project, which will be financed entirely through federal dollars and future airport revenues.
With July passenger traffic up 11% from last year, PSP’s need for a modern system is pressing. The upgrade will deliver faster screening, larger capacity, and compliance with the latest TSA standards—preparing the airport for projected growth over the next 15 years.
“This is a major step forward in modernizing PSP for the future,” said Harry Barrett, Jr., the airport’s Executive Director of Aviation.
Construction begins in 2025, with completion expected in 2028 as part of Progress PSP, the airport’s wider capital improvement program.
