Two months after their lottery ticket landed them a whopping $1.34 billion in winnings, the owners have finally come forward to collect the money.
It is the third highest sum ever won in the American lottery "Mega Millions". Anyone who is so lucky would want to get their money quickly, wouldn't they? Not so the two people who cleared billions jackpot.
On July 29th they hit with their winning numbers: 13-36-45-57-67 and the Mega Ball 14 in black. It wasn't until 54 days later that they redeemed their prize. They had just under a week to decide whether they wanted the sum to be paid out in one fell swoop or annually over 29 years.
After much deliberation, the two winners, who wish to remain unknown, opted for the one-off payment, although it incurs significantly more tax. With 390 million dollars, they still come off very well.
The two had bought the ticket together at a gas station in Des Plaines (US state Illinois) and decided to share the profit if they were lucky. The three dollars for the lottery ticket was well spent in her case. Despite a 1 in 302.5 million chance of winning.
