SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two United States citizens accused of smuggling narcotics through an immigration checkpoint Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 4:40 p.m., a grey 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan approached the Highway 86 checkpoint. The agent inspecting vehicles in the primary lanes referred the vehicle to secondary inspection.
A Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted the vehicle's interior area. Agents conducted an in-depth inspection of the car and discovered narcotics concealed in aftermarket compartments under the driver and front passenger seats. A total of 60 vacuum-sealed packages containing a white crystal-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine were seized.
Agents arrested the 21-year-old female driver and an 18-year-old male passenger. The 60 pounds of methamphetamine had an estimated street value of $132,000.
The driver, passenger, vehicle, and narcotics were turned to another federal law enforcement agency.
