INDIO, CA – Prepare for an unforgettable evening as the City of Indio unveils its newest public art installation, The Messengers, during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the heart of Downtown Indio. The event will take place amid the lively energy of Food Truck Fridays at the corner of Towne Street and Bliss Avenue.

Towering over the crowd at an impressive 65 to 75 feet tall, The Messengers are the creation of internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan artist Kumkum Fernando. Originally captivating festivalgoers at the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, these vibrant, robot-like sculptures have now been permanently installed in Indio, bringing a bold splash of color and creativity to the city’s ever-evolving cultural landscape.

The celebration promises to be a true Indio-style gathering — colorful, inclusive, and full of life. Attendees can enjoy gourmet bites from local food trucks, live music, and a first-hand look at the monumental art pieces that are already inspiring conversation and curiosity.

“This is more than just a ribbon-cutting,” said Indio Mayor Oscar Ortiz. “It’s a celebration of Indio’s identity as a City of Festivals and our commitment to public art and cultural innovation.”

As the largest and fastest-growing city in the Coachella Valley, Indio continues to thrive as a hub of creativity, diversity, and opportunity. With more than 90,000 residents, top-rated schools, award-winning parks, and a vibrant downtown scene, Indio offers both residents and visitors a place to grow, create, and connect.

Now, with The Messengers standing tall in the city center, Indio adds yet another vibrant chapter to its legacy of art, music, and community.

Whether you're here for the art, the food, or the fun — or all three — this is one summer night you won’t want to miss.
