Apple Enters the Foldable Market

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple entered the foldable smartphone market Wednesday, unveiling the iPhone Duo alongside its new iPhone 18 Pro lineup during the company’s annual fall showcase.

The launch, led by new Chief Executive John Ternus, represents one of Apple’s most significant product expansions in years. The foldable Duo gives the company a new premium device aimed at consumers seeking a larger screen without carrying a tablet-sized product.

When opened, the iPhone Duo provides a 7.6-inch inner display—the largest offered on an iPhone. Folded, it is comparable in size to a passport and operates through a 5.4-inch outer display. The titanium device will be available in star white and night sky.

The Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and features a dual-battery system and vapor-chamber cooling designed to support gaming, multitasking and artificial-intelligence workloads. Its adapted iOS 27 software allows applications and content to transition smoothly between the inner and outer displays.

Prices start at $1,999 for 256GB of storage, placing the Duo firmly in the luxury smartphone category. Preorders begin Oct. 16, with deliveries and retail availability starting Oct. 23.

Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, powered by the same A20 Pro processor. Both include expanded Apple Intelligence features, the new Siri AI and additional privacy protections. Camera upgrades include a 48-megapixel main camera with variable aperture, allowing greater control over lighting and depth of field.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max begins at $1,299. Both will be offered in black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Preorders open Sept. 12, followed by general availability Sept. 18.

Apple’s move into foldable phones expands its reach at the high end of the market while placing greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, productivity and privacy.
