DLNews Desert Hot Springs:
This September, Desert Hot Springs will proudly throw open its doors—quite literally—as the California Preservation Foundation brings back its statewide heritage showcase, Doors Open California. Now in its fourth year, the event offers a once-a-year pass into some of the state’s most fascinating and rarely seen places, with more than 70 historic sites welcoming curious visitors across four weekends. For $20, guests enjoy an all-access pass to behind-the-scenes tours, historic talks, and architectural surprises.
Desert Hot Springs, always ready to remind the world that history thrives here alongside hot mineral waters and sweeping views, will feature two local gems. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, the handmade Hopi-inspired fortress of reclaimed wood and ingenuity, opens its labyrinth of 35 rooms, 150 windows, and 65 mismatched doors. More than a museum, it’s a testament to Cabot Yerxa’s eccentric vision—part art project, part survival story, and entirely unforgettable. Visitors can wander its halls filled with Native American art, souvenirs from Cabot’s travels, and his own work, and hear firsthand why this desert landmark has captivated guests for generations.
Equally special is the Historic Rock House, a Riverside County landmark built in 1946 by craftsman Lee Watkins. Preserved in its original form, the Rock House now serves as home to the Desert Hot Springs Historical Society and its archives. Inside, exhibits and photographs tell the evolving story of this desert community, while outside, its demonstration garden proves that even in arid land, creativity can coax beauty and bounty from the soil.
For a city sometimes overshadowed by its glamorous neighbors, Desert Hot Springs is relishing this moment in the spotlight. Doors Open California isn’t just about access to buildings—it’s about celebrating stories, sweat, and vision, and few towns embody that better than this one.
Tickets and full details are available at californiapreservation.org/doca, with updates and photos shared under #DOCA25. Consider this an invitation not just to look, but to step inside and rediscover the pride of Desert Hot Springs.
