His country is bitterly poor; around 60 percent of the population is affected by hunger - and yet the vice president - and dictator's son - of Equatorial Guinea affords himself pure luxury every day!

Completely absurd: While most of his population has to live on less than two dollars a day, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue (55) treats himself to a penthouse visit in New York. And show it off on Instagram, too!

The price: 75,000 US dollars – per night! Obiang Mangue resided in “The Mark Penthouse” in the posh hotel “The Mark” in New York City.

Obiang Mangue flew to New York for the UN meeting. There, he talked about the lack of development in Africa - while at the same time spending thousands of dollars.

He has been Vice President of the country in sub-Saharan Africa since 2016. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo's father has ruled the country as a dictatorial president since 1979.

Although Equatorial Guinea is considered one of Africa's wealthiest countries, most of the population is unaware of this. Only about half of the population has access to clean drinking water, and 7.9 percent of children die before age five.

Meanwhile, the presidential family is swimming in money. US law enforcement authorities believe Vice President Obiang Mangue derives large portions of his wealth from corrupt dealings involving the country's oil and gas reserves.

Obiang Mangue's foreign possessions include two houses in South Africa worth around 2.7 million dollars.

Since 2006, he has also owned a property in Malibu with sea views, its golf course, eight bathrooms, and several garages (worth 35 million dollars), a 460 m² house in the noble 16th arrondissement of Paris, and the hip-hop music -Label TNO Entertainment.

In 2008, he owned a few examples of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, valued at 1.2 million dollars, and a Maserati MC 12 for 735,000 dollars.

However, the Geneva public prosecutor's office confiscated eleven of his luxury cars in October 2016, including a Koenigsegg One and the Bugatti Veyron, shortly before Obiang Mangue could take them out of the country on a transport plane. In the following two months, the Swiss confiscated 13 more vehicles. They were foreclosed on in September 2019 for $27 million.

Between 2004 and 2006, Obiang Mangue spent 43 million dollars on his lavish lifestyle - more than Equatorial Guinea's entire education budget in 2005!

Equatorial Guinea has one of the worst human rights records in the world. Reporters Without Borders calls President Obiang one of the “predators of press freedom.” A big problem in the country is human trafficking. The US Trafficking in Persons Report lists Equatorial Guinea as a source and destination country for forced labor and sex trafficking.
