Again and again, King Charles III. (73) fights back the tears when he talks about his late mother, Queen Elizabeth († 96) – but he does his duty.
At 6 p.m., Charles' first speech as the new king was broadcast in London's Buckingham Palace. He encouraged millions of grieving Brits despite embracing the greatest loss of his life just yesterday.
In a London pub, guests listen to the new king's speech.
"Throughout her life, Her Majesty the Queen – my beloved mother – was an inspiration and example to all my family and me, and we owe her from our hearts as much as any family can owe their mother; for their love, affection, advice, understanding, and example," said King Charles III. in the Blue Drawing Room of the palace. He then addressed the people of Britain directly: "I know her passing has brought great sadness to so many of you, and I share this sense of immeasurable loss with you all."
Queen Elizabeth was a ruler whose "determination and devotion never faltered." Even in times of grief and loss.
After paying tribute to his mother, the king announced that his heir to the throne, William, would take over his title as Prince of Wales. "With Catherine by his side, I know our new Prince and Princess of Wales will continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring those on the fringes of society front and center where vital aid can be given."
Then he finds surprisingly clear, loving words for his son Harry, who caused so much trouble for the royal family with his wife, Meghan. "I also want to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build lives overseas."
At the end of his speech, Charles addresses his mother directly and clearly has to fight back the tears: "And dearest mom, as you begin your last great journey to my dear late dad, I want to say one thing: thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to all the nations you have so diligently served over the years. May swarms of angels sing you to rest."
2019, the family was still together - a year later, Harry and Meghan (right in the background) broke with the royal family.
Charles welcomed Britons at Buckingham Palace.
ON FRIDAY, Charles III traveled from Balmoral Castle (Scotland) to the English capital. Inseparable at his side: the king's wife Camilla (75). In front of Buckingham Palace, the royal couple gave a foretaste of the coming reign: The two got out of their limousine and greeted mourning Britons who had gathered in front of the king's seat. After bathing in the crowd, Charles went to the palace to record the speech.
