Desert Hot Springs, Calif- Marines from 29 Palms are committed to helping clean up the public schools in Desert Hot Springs through a unique program sponsored by Mayor Scott Matas. More than 24 Marines from the 29 Palms military base will be deployed to clean up Cabot Yerxa Elementary on Saturday, Dec. 2, starting at 8:00 a.m.
Teachers, parents, students, and volunteers from the DHS Beautification Committee will join the Marines and the mayor, along with DHS Councilman Roger Nunez, for a school cleanup event.
Mayor Matas started the DHS Beautification Committee two years ago. During that time, the city was awarded funding from The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Housing Authority Funds for $500,000. The money is slated to be used for home and business improvement programs. Applications are being reviewed for owner-occupied, single-family homes and local businesses along the main business corridors of Palm Drive and Pierson Blvd.
The DHS Beautification Committee has cleaned up vacant lots along the downtown business corridor, cleaned and landscaped for single-family homeowners in need, and now turned their attention to cleaning up and around the city's schools.
Palm Springs Disposal Service and Desert Valley Disposal (PSDS/DVD) deliver and pick up extra trash dumpsters for all the trash, debris, plastics, small furniture, and other large items collected.
Liz Hernandez, a PSDS/DVD community liaison, will work with Cabot Yerxa Principal Andrea Aguaydacan to present students with educational talks about responsible recycling and the importance of keeping our Earth and communities clean.
The committee will provide garbage bags, gloves, rakes, and pickup sticks. Refreshments of donuts, fresh fruits, juices, cookies, and water will be provided. The public is invited to help. Just show up.
