What a terrible drama: Tamieka White (46) wanted to save her eight-year-old son from a dog that had gone wild - and died in front of her child.
The policewoman from Indianapolis rushed out of her house on Tuesday evening when she heard her son's screams: A pit bull attacked the child. She threw herself between the animal and the eight-year-old, who fled into the house.
Around 7:45 p.m., the police were called. When the officers arrived in front of the house of their colleague, they were presented with a picture of horror: White lay motionless in her blood, and the dog jumped directly at one of the police officers as if in a frenzy. Then, without hesitation, they shot the pit bull.
Immediately, the officers called an ambulance, but the paramedics could only determine the death of the 46-year-old. White's son was also bitten and directly taken to the nearest hospital, recovering from "non-life threatening injuries."
The Indianapolis Police Chief stated Wednesday, "She died last night protecting the most important person in her life." Continuing, he paid tribute to the deceased, "Deputy White was a bright light to all who knew her. She always had a smile on her face. We are immensely grateful for her nearly 17 years of service to our agency." But most of all, White was "a mother," he said.
A police spokesman said the attacking dog did not belong to White. Police have identified the owner, he said. However, the agency declined to release further information about the dog's owner.
The statement said the deceased dog, three other dogs, and a cat were seized. All the dogs appeared to be pit bull species, and a DNA test will show whether they were illegal breeds. The animals are being held as part of the ongoing investigation into the attack.
He said the owner of the dogs will also be questioned about the incident in the coming days.
