Three and a half years have passed since George Floyd (†46) died. He was killed by a police officer who knelt on Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.
Derek Chauvin (47), now an ex-cop, was convicted of second-degree murder and is in federal prison in Arizona. According to a report by the Associated Press news agency, he has now been stabbed severely there.
Chauvin is said to have been so seriously injured with a stabbing weapon by another inmate at around 12.30 p.m. local time that prison staff had to carry out life-saving measures. The 47-year-old is said to be in hospital, but nothing is known about his condition.
The prison wing with around 380 inmates in which the killer cop was attacked is not a high-security area. The "New York Post" writes about the prison in Tucson, saying there are too few staff and security deficiencies.
The murder of George Floyd caused a worldwide sensation.
The murder of George Floyd caused a worldwide sensation. In May 2020, excerpts from a video showing how the black American was the victim of police violence in the person of Derek Chauvin went viral online.
You can see this in the clips: The 46-year-old repeatedly shouts, "I can't breathe" - "I can't breathe." However, the member of the Minneapolis Police Department does not let go of Floyd. Shortly afterward, the arrested man was dead. The background to the completely excessive police operation: George Floyd, who was demonstrably unarmed, is said to have paid for a pack of fags with a fake 20-dollar bill.
Because of the death, hundreds of thousands of people around the world took to the streets to protest against racism and police violence.
Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
Derek Chauvin was put on trial, which numerous television stations broadcasted. It was revealed in court that 18 complaints had been filed against the police officer during his career. He was involved in three shootings, one of which ended fatally.
Addressing the bereaved, Chauvin said immediately before the sentencing: "I would like to express my condolences to the Floyd family." This legal dodge was of little use. At the end of the trial, the White House said that US President Joe Biden (81) considered the sentence appropriate.
The two police officers who had pinned Floyd to the ground together with Derek Chauvin later pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting. They were sentenced to 36 and 42 months in prison, respectively.
