The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (V-Day) is a time for all people to join forces to end violence against women and girls. Unfortunately, hundreds of millions of girls are still subject to female genital mutilation. This is a violation of human rights and a gross injustice.

Despite global progress, women remain underrepresented in the political, economic, and social realms. In some countries, women have fewer legal rights than men. They also have fewer opportunities to participate in the workforce, earn higher wages, and access various public benefits. Gender equality is vital for individual security and the well-being of communities. In addition, it reduces mortality rates and improves the health of children and families.

For example, if a girl receives secondary education, she will be healthier and contribute to a more robust economy for her family. Girls with secondary education are more likely to be employed and receive higher incomes. Additionally, they are less likely to be stunted, and their child mortality rates are lower.
