STEVE EARLE & LOS LOBOS RELEASE COLLABORATIVE NEW SINGLE “VOLVER A CELAYA” TODAY VIA NEW WEST RECORDS

Steve Earle & Los Lobos released the pair's first ever collaboration, “Volver A Celaya,” today via New West Records. The song was originally written by Earle during the intimate songwriting workshops he taught at the Jalopy Theatre and School of Music in Red Hook, Brooklyn last Spring. He then met up with the legendary band in Richmond, Virginia, earlier this summer where Steve Berlin produced the studio session at Red Amp Studios.
Earle says, “The character speaking to you in this song is based on guys that I worked with framing houses, right after I dropped out of High School in 1971. At first I worked with other guys who looked like me - anglos on crews that worked from 7:00am til 3:30 and then knocked off and headed to the nearest beer joint. Minimum wage was $1.60 an hour and I never took home a check bigger than 85 bucks - until I discovered Mexican crews worked from ‘can’t see to can’t see,’ sometimes putting in 50, even 55 hours a week. Shortly after starting with those guys, I held a hundred dollars in my hand for the first time in my life. It was simply a different way of thinking about making a living. These guys put in all the hours they could, brought the money home to their family on the westside - or back across the border to Mexico. I didn’t mind working late because, as far as I knew, nothing cool happened ‘til dark anyway.” He continues, “These days, with the word ‘immigration’ on the tip of everyone’s tongue, I found myself wondering where Cruz, Armando, and Eusebio are today and what they would make of this mess, so I set to putting words in their mouths. When writing was done and it was time to record, there wasn’t a shred of doubt in my mind who to call. Los Lobos and I have been connected at our roots since the beginning of our careers. We’ve shared stages at festivals and toured together as a package but collaborating in the studio was a box unchecked - until now.”
Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin added, “Working with Steve Earle on this project is the latest culmination of a long and fruitful relationship going back decades. We had an absolute blast working on this special song with him as there are few songwriters extant who can say so much by simply painting the picture of life under the current regime. We look forward to future collaborations.”
“Volver A Celaya” is available across streaming platforms today. It will be available as a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single released October 16 via Independent Retailers and is also available for pre-order NOW via NEW WEST RECORDS. The single’s B-side is Earle’s “City of Immigrants,” originally released on his 2007 Grammy Award-winning album Washington Square Serenade. The song stands as a powerful folk tribute to the immigrant experience and the generations of newcomers who continue to shape American identity. Nearly two decades later, its message resonates with renewed urgency. In May, Earle released a video for the song directed by the actor and filmmaker Steve Buscemi. As immigration remains at the forefront of national conversation, the video arrived as both a protest and a celebration, underscoring the essential role immigrants play in defining the American story. Steve Earle is currently on his Fifty-One Years of Songs and Stories tour, an expansive North American run that has included more than 70 dates across the U.S. and Canada. On August 29, he will launch a European tour with The Waterboys starting in Glasgow. In October, Earle will once again appear at the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. The weekend’s festivities will kick off with a special tribute to Earle at The Masonic on October 1st, featuring performances by Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Hot Tuna, Victoria Williams, Molly Tuttle, Buddy Miller, and more.
Los Lobos has performed 100+ gigs a year for five decades running, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. About Steve Earle:
Steve Earle is widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. As a protege of legendary songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, he quickly became a master storyteller in his own right. In addition to penning songs for Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, The Pretenders, and many more, 1986 saw him release his debut record, Guitar Town. The album quickly rose to #1 on country charts and stands as a timeless Americana classic. Meanwhile, his 1988 hit “Copperhead Road” has been named an official state song of Tennessee. Speaking to his impact and influence, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, while he was honored by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music in 2023. In 2025, he joined the Grand Ole Opry as its newest member. Using his platform to challenge power and amplify marginalized voices, he is a longtime advocate for social justice, prison reform, and free expression. Ultimately, Earle has carved out a legacy that extends far beyond music itself.
