DLNews Breaking News:
At least 16 people are dead, 60 are injured, and a suspect is at large after multiple shootings in Lewiston, Maine, Wednesday night. Residents are being advised to shelter in place, police said. The city is located about 36 miles north of Portland. In a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), a Maine State Police official told residents to stay inside with locked doors. The city's mayor warned that the situation is "active and ongoing." The Androscoggin County sheriff has shared two photos of the armed suspect.
Police have identified the shooting scenes as a Lewiston restaurant and bowling alley. One witness told WMTW she saw several people running from the scene. The witness, Nichoel Wyman Arel, captured video of the scene on her phone and sent it to CNN. The footage shows police and ambulances arriving at the scene.
The city's mayor also warned businesses to lock their doors and to stay away from the area until authorities give the all-clear. The city's schools are on lockdown, including a school where parents and teachers were attending a parent-teacher conference.
The city's Central Maine Medical Center issued a statement saying it was reacting to a mass casualty, mass shooter event. It is coordinating with area hospitals to take in patients. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has offered personnel and resources, a spokesperson from the bureau's Boston field office told CNN. Maine Gov. Janet Mills says she has been briefed on the situation.
