Forget Mykonos: Why The Danai Is Greece’s Best-Kept Luxury Secret

By Pam Price

If your idea of a relaxing Mediterranean vacation doesn't involve being elbowed by a selfie stick it’s time to look to north Greece and the Sithonia peninsula of Halkidiki. Here, where pine forests melt into a shimmering blue Aegean Sea, lies The Danai—a luxury resort celebrating its 50th season.

The Danai is the anti-mega-resort. It’s family-owned, fiercely authentic, and possesses the kind of soul you can't manufacture with a corporate design team. Back in 1975, when the area was largely untouched, a Berlin native named Otto Riefenstahl and his wife, Danai, bought a patch of coastal land. Back then, beachfront property was cheap because the soil wasn't great for olives (oh, how times change). They opened "House Danai" in 1976 with just four rooms, brick-built beds, and supplies delivered via horse and cart.

Fast forward five decades, and those four rustic rooms have evolved into 56 individually crafted suites and villas managed by Otto and Danai’s son, Kimon. Local families have worked here for generations, meaning the staff actually remembers how you like your morning frappe, rather than just treating you like a walking room number.

To celebrate its golden jubilee, the property teamed up with London’s Muza Lab to revamp its coveted Pool Suites, main pool, and 1230-foot private beach. The vibe? Think "relaxed Mediterranean billionaire's private beach house" rather than "stuffy five-star hotel." The suites feature white wood, woven raffia, and hand-carved olive leaf motifs. Minibars are clad in crushed mother-of-pearl that shimmers as the sun moves, and the bathrooms boast Cipollino Verde marble—a forest-green stone with fluid streaks that look like water rushing over rock. You can choose between deep teal decor (nodding to the sea) or coral tones, which embody Philoxenia—the ancient Greek spirit of showing hospitality to strangers.

Outside, the main pool has been reimagined with custom teal-and-white mosaics inspired by basket weaving, and the terrace is dotted with local pottery. And because a luxury holiday isn't complete without a nautical flex, The Danai has expanded its private yacht fleet. This year, they've launched Birdie, a sleek 48-foot Princess flybridge yacht designed specifically for couples. You can hop on board right from the resort, sip a glass of Assyrtiko selected from the hotel’s legendary 1,700-label wine cellar (the largest private collection in Greece), and cruise around the Diaporos Islands while looking for dolphins. If you have kids in tow, you can charter their larger yachts for a multi-day, Mamma Mia!-themed island-hopping voyage.

Speaking of kids, while you are out channeling your inner Pierce Brosnan on the high seas, the resort’s "Elisabeth & Friends" crèche and kids' club will keep the little ones entertained. They’ve even launched a brand-new junior sailing school this season.

With rooms starting at €600 a night, it’s an investment in your sanity. The Danai offers world-class luxury without the pretentious attitude, the neon party lights, or the crowds. It’s proof that sometimes, the best way to move forward is to stay exactly true to your roots. Visit
