This past Sunday, Oct. 8, during a show at U2’s Las Vegas Sphere residency, "Pride (In the Name of Love)" — which was inspired in the early 1980s by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his fight for civil rights — was updated by front man Bono, who dedicated the performance to those killed in a massacre early Saturday morning, Oct. 7, 2023, in Israel by Hamas terrorists, including 260 concertgoers attending a music festival.

In total, more than 1,000 innocent people have reportedly been killed in Israel; more than 2,700 have been injured.

Said Bono before the song was performed on Sunday:

“In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about nonviolence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for nonviolence. But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed. So sing with us and those beautiful kids at that music festival.”

He then updated the lyrics to “Pride” to reflect the weekend’s devastating attacks:

Early morning, October 7
As the sun is rising in the desert sky
Stars of David, they took your life
But they could not take your pride
