Trump Urges "New President" in Ukraine Amid Russian Diesel Deal Fallout
US President Donald Trump has publicly suggested that Ukraine needs a change in leadership, escalating a rapid breakdown in relations between Washington and Kyiv over a newly announced energy agreement with Moscow. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's negotiating record and his ongoing military tactics. "I suggest they get a new leader who could make a deal because he could've made many deals and for some reason he never does," Trump stated, adding, "I think it's time for Ukraine to get a new President".
The diplomatic clash was triggered by Trump’s recent announcement of a bilateral agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at easing the current global fuel crisis. Under the arrangement, Russia will immediately release 300,000 tonnes of diesel to American and global markets, with another 500,000 tonnes scheduled for November and potentially millions more to follow. To facilitate the transfer, the US Treasury Department issued a temporary license suspending certain sanctions on Russian diesel exports through April 7, 2027. The White House is pitching the move as a necessary measure to lower record-high domestic pump prices, which surged heavily following recent joint US-Israeli military operations in Iran.
Kyiv reacted to the sanctions waiver with immediate outrage. Zelensky condemned the agreement as an "investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged" and characterized the lifting of energy restrictions as a gift to Putin. The Ukrainian leader argued that Moscow swiftly "expressed its thanks" for the sanctions relief by launching a barrage of glide bombs at residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia. Furthermore, Zelensky voiced deep frustration over parallel peace talks taking place in Miami, where US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have been meeting with Ukrainian officials. Zelensky stated that his delegation was being "used as a front" while Washington quietly negotiated the parallel energy arrangement with Moscow.
The Ukrainian condemnation prompted Trump's fierce rebuke regarding Ukraine's political leadership. Central to the American president's frustration is Ukraine's continued campaign of drone strikes against Russian oil refineries, which the White House blames for exacerbating global fuel shortages and driving up prices just weeks ahead of the critical US midterm elections. Trump openly demanded an end to the Ukrainian refinery strikes, stating that he previously told Zelensky he could do "whatever you want to Russia, but don't hit the refineries" due to the broader impact on global markets.
The current standoff marks one of the most severe public fractures between the two allied nations. While Zelensky maintains that targeting Russia's energy infrastructure is a necessary and justified response to Moscow's years-long assault on the Ukrainian power grid, the White House is increasingly prioritizing domestic economic pressures and inflation. As international analysts question whether Russia's damaged infrastructure can actually deliver the promised volume of fuel, the growing diplomatic rift threatens to severely alter the dynamic of future American security support for Kyiv.
