His actions shocked an entire country. Now he is dead.

It has been three days since two perpetrators killed ten people and injured another 18 in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Police quickly named brothers Damien (31) and Myles (32) Sanderson as the main suspects.

The former was found dead Monday. Myles' escape continued for two days. It wasn't until Wednesday that police reassured the Canadian public, saying, "Myles Sanderson has been located near Rosthern, Saskatchewan. There is no longer a risk to public safety." He died of a self-inflicted injury, he said.

The suspected knife stabber had been wanted since May for failing to comply with his parole conditions. In addition, he had been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for theft, among other charges.

Police had become aware of Sanderson through a tip about a stolen car driven by a man armed with a knife. An officer rammed the vehicle and confronted the 32-year-old. Whether he died directly or only while in the officers' custody is uncertain.

"Now the healing can begin," said Brian Burns, whose wife and son was killed in the attack. "Hopefully, I can go back to sleep now that I know he's gone."

He's not alone in that. Mark Arcand, who lost his half-sister and their son, reports, "I woke up last night screaming. I can't get what I saw that day out of my head."

They were relieved as they both are, but the question of why continues to plague them. That's because the police have not yet made any statement about a motive.

But even if the crime itself can't be explained, survivors wonder why Sanderson was at large in the first place. His court record is littered with violent outbursts.

In 2017, he broke into an ex-girlfriend's home and punched a hole in the bathroom door while his two children hid in the tub. He threatened to kill a store clerk and set his parents' house on fire just days later.

In 2018, he drunkenly stabbed two people with a fork and knocked another unconscious. Still, upon his release, the parole board ruled, "We believe they will not be an unreasonable risk to society."

Tragic how wrong they were with that statement
