Elizabeth II is dead. The British queen died peacefully this afternoon in Balmoral. Buckingham Palace announced this on Thursday. Her son Charles is now king.

On Twitter, Buckingham Palace said, "The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
