EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Spain conquered the soccer world Sunday, defeating defending champion Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a gripping 2026 FIFA World Cup final that demanded patience, discipline and one decisive finish.

Ferran Torres became Spain’s unlikely hero in the 106th minute. The substitute arrived at the six-yard box as Nico Williams drove the ball back across goal, fought through pressure from Nahuel Molina and powered his shot beneath the crossbar. President Donald Trump attended the match with first lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump later participated in the trophy ceremony, congratulating Spanish captain Rodri before the new champions raised the World Cup.

The spectacle belonged to the entertainers before and during the match. Once the final whistle sounded, however, the night belonged entirely to Spain—a team that remained composed, trusted its style and waited until the 106th minute to claim the world.
