Shocked: A mother brings her children to safety after the knife attack in the Westfield shopping center.
DLNews Breaking News:
Six dead in a terrorist attack in Sydney. At 3:20 p.m., the killer stabbed women and children.
Sydney—It was the first day of vacation in Australia's metropolis. The sun was shining, and thousands were milling about in the streets and shopping malls near the world-famous Bondi Beach. But horror struck the city around 3:20 p.m. local time (7:20 a.m. German time) on Saturday morning.
The armed perpetrator in the mall.
Videos from surveillance cameras show a man in a green and yellow shirt storming through the Westfield Shopping Center with a long knife, going up and down escalators and running past shocked passers-by.
Then he starts stabbing people, apparently at random. According to an eyewitness, the perpetrator stabbed two security employees. Two people are killed, and several are injured in a clothing store. People grab items of clothing to bandage their wounds and stop bleeding.
The killer even stabbed a baby.
But the bearded killer storms on – and even stabs a mother and her baby! Witnesses describe the horrific scene in Australian media. You see blood coming out of the mother's mouth - and how she throws her child in final desperation at two strangers. The two are brothers; they catch the seriously injured baby and can escape. The child needs emergency surgery in a hospital.
The mother does not survive the murderous attack. She is one of the knife man's six fatalities so far. Several people's lives are in danger. There would probably have been more deaths if individual people hadn't heroically opposed the killer.
The hero in the white T-shirt
A video shows a man in a white T-shirt stopping the killer on an escalator. He holds a kind of bollard over his head and threatens the man with it. A single police officer finally confronts him on a higher level in the department store. Witnesses report: He turns to her, and the woman shoots, fatally hitting the attacker. Photos show him lying lifeless on the floor in a pool of blood, with a blonde policewoman kneeling next to him.
The perpetrator is said to be a 40-year-old who was known to the police but was not considered a potential terrorist. What exactly was behind the attack is not yet known. The whole of Australia is in shock after the attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “I want to say to every Australian affected by this tragedy: all of Australia stands with you.”
