U.S. politician Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a towering figure in American politics is recovering after an unfortunate accident during an official appearance in Luxembourg. The 84-year-old fell on Friday evening while attending a solemn memorial event honoring the historic Battle of the Bulge, a pivotal conflict of World War II fought in 1944-1945.
CNN and other outlets confirmed that Pelosi fell as she descended a staircase. She was initially treated at a hospital in Luxembourg but later transported to Germany for further medical attention. Pelosi was flown aboard a U.S. Air Force Learjet to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, an American military hospital in Rhineland-Palatinate. According to her spokesperson, Ian Krager, she underwent hip surgery and is now on the road to recovery. "She is receiving excellent care from doctors and medical professionals," Krager stated.
The incident prompted an outpouring of concern and support from members of the bipartisan delegation accompanying Pelosi to the memorial. Republican Representative Derrick Van Orden, who witnessed the accident, expressed his well-wishes but refrained from commenting further on her condition, citing respect for her privacy. "It would not be appropriate for me to comment on her health. I wish her the very best," he wrote.
Representative Michael McCaul, another Republican delegation member, also voiced his disappointment over Pelosi's absence for the remaining events. "I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans," McCaul said. "But she is strong, and I am confident she will return to her feet soon."
The Battle of the Bulge memorial held deep significance for Pelosi, known for her long-standing dedication to honoring U.S. veterans and fostering strong transatlantic relations. Her absence was keenly felt, underscoring the bipartisan respect she commands, even amidst the polarized political climate in the United States.
Nancy Pelosi, who represents San Francisco in Congress, has been a formidable force in American politics since her election to Congress in 1987. Serving twice as Speaker of the House, she has cemented her legacy as one of the most influential lawmakers in modern U.S. history. While she stepped down from her leadership role in 2022, Pelosi remains an active and highly respected member of the House of Representatives.
Despite the setback, her spokesperson indicated that Pelosi remains optimistic and looks forward to resuming her duties after her recovery. "She is eager to return to the United States soon," Krager stated, highlighting her determination and resilience.
