Paris, France—Five years after a devastating fire ravaged the iconic Gothic structure, Notre Dame Cathedral's highly anticipated reopening has been forced indoors due to severe weather conditions. A storm, with wind gusts predicted to reach up to 80 km/h, compelled organizers to alter the meticulously planned ceremony, which had been months in the making under the direction of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Over 35 global leaders will attend the ceremony, including French President Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Adapting to the Elements

Originally slated to begin at 7 p.m. on the cathedral's forecourt, the ceremony was to feature a short address by President Macron, followed by Parisian Archbishop Laurent Ulrich symbolically reopening the cathedral doors and leading approximately 3,000 guests inside for the consecration of the cathedral’s newly restored organ. The evening was to conclude with a cultural performance by world-renowned pianist Lang Lang, along with surprise guests.

However, due to the storm warning issued by Météo-France, these plans were significantly adjusted. In a joint statement, the Elysée Palace and the Paris diocese explained, “We had to reorganize the preparations to ensure the safety of all participants and the integrity of the event.”

A Shift Indoors

President Macron’s address initially planned for the open-air forecourt, will now take place inside the cathedral, following tense negotiations over the logistics of the move. To preserve part of the original vision, the planned outdoor concert will still be recorded live in front of the cathedral and broadcast during the indoor event.

Despite these changes, the reopening remains a momentous occasion, marking the culmination of a massive restoration effort. This project mobilized over 1,000 specialists, from stonemasons to stained glass artisans, and cost an estimated €850 million.
