Nancy Kerrigan Inspires Desert Skaters

The Desert Figure Skating Club celebrated its 40th anniversary with Olympic figure skating medalist Nancy Kerrigan, who brought her Ice Dreams Workshop to the Berger Foundation Iceplex on September 6. Kerrigan spent time with 40 skaters, teaching them some of the moves a skater must master. While teaching on the ice, she would stop to encourage individual skaters and help them along the way. The Desert Figure Skating Club boasts a membership of more than 70 skaters of all ages.

The day started with the workshop participants gathering to hear Kerrigan speak about the importance of warming up before a practice or event. She demonstrated warm-up exercises on the upper tier at the Iceplex, and the skaters followed along with each exercise before heading to the ice. She also answered their questions.

A special treat was having Gracie Gold, a fellow Olympic medalist and U.S. champion, join Kerrigan to help with skating techniques. Once on the ice, the two demonstrated moves, and the participants took their turns following across the ice. The skaters ranged from young children just starting out to older skaters who still enjoy the sport.

For many young Olympic hopefuls, an opportunity like this is a dream come true—a chance to learn from someone whose footsteps they hope to follow as they pursue dreams of their own.

The weekend also included a luncheon at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa, featuring a silent auction and a signing of Kerrigan’s book.

For those inspired to give skating a try, the Iceplex offers public skating and figure skating classes. Coaches help beginners learn to skate and more experienced skaters build their skills. Classes are available for children ages 3 and up, as well as adults. You can rent skates if you don’t have your own, and public skating sessions offer a chance to get out on the ice simply for the enjoyment of the sport.
