Look Up, Desert

The Coachella Valley’s mountains will become a gateway to the universe this August as Friends of the Desert Mountains presents three free evenings of stargazing and outdoor discovery.

The nighttime programs will give families, residents and summer visitors an opportunity to step away from glowing screens, look through real telescopes and learn what is shining above the desert.

The series begins Saturday, Aug. 8, with “Star Party at the Monument” from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center, 51-500 Highway 74 in Palm Desert.

Members of the Astronomical Society of the Desert will lead informal sky tours and help guests observe celestial objects through telescopes and binoculars. The family-friendly event is wheelchair accessible, with asphalt surfaces available. Admission is free, although organizers welcome a suggested $10 donation to support volunteer programs.

Stargazing moves to higher ground Saturday, Aug. 15, for “Star Party in the Mountains.” The program will run from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Sawmill Trailhead parking lot in Pinyon Pines.

The mountain setting offers a different perspective on the desert sky, with volunteers helping participants recognize stars, constellations and planets. The event is free, wheelchair accessible and does not require a reservation.

The final August gathering, “Night Sky Viewing Stars and Planets,” will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Art Smith Trailhead in Palm Desert. Volunteer astronomers will set up telescopes and invite guests to stop by during the two-hour program. Depending on conditions, participants may see constellations, bright planets, the moon and occasional meteors.

Reservations are required for the Aug. 22 event. Registration is expected to open two weeks beforehand through the event calendar at desertmountains.org/events. A suggested $5 donation is appreciated.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Guests should bring water, wear closed-toed shoes and avoid using white lights around the telescopes. Equipment should not be touched without permission.

Because clear skies are essential, programs may be canceled due to clouds, strong winds or rain. Guests should check the event calendar before traveling. Additional information is available at 760-568-9918.
