According to his statements, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un (38) and his entourage have not sold weapons and ammunition to Russia.
These are "baseless" rumors spread by the U.S. to damage North Korea's international reputation; the state-run KCNA news agency quoted a vice department head at North Korea's Defense Ministry as saying Tuesday. North Korea does not engage in arms deals with Russia and does not "plan to do so in the future," the statement said.
U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby had said last Wednesday that North Korea had shipped a "significant" amount of munitions to Russia and was trying to create the impression that the shipments were destined for the Middle East or North Africa. According to Kirby, however, it was unclear whether the munitions arrived in Russia. "We will continue to monitor whether the shipments are received," he said
As a result of international sanctions, Russia is suffering from a shortage of army equipment and, therefore, must turn to states such as North Korea and Iran to continue its war of aggression against Ukraine, Kirby added.
Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea have continued to escalate in recent days-most, most notably as a result of a series of North Korean missile tests last week. In response, the U.S. and South Korea extended a joint maneuver by their air forces. North Korea, in turn, called those military exercises an "open provocation" on Monday and announced a "persistent, determined, and overwhelming" response.
Washington and Seoul have warned for months that North Korea could conduct a nuclear weapons test shortly. It would be the first such test since 2017. In total, North Korea has conducted six nuclear weapons tests since 2006.
