This mega-prison is located in the most dangerous country in the world. 40,000 inmates, as many as would fit into a medium-sized soccer stadium, will one day be behind bars here.
The authorities in El Salvador have now published these pictures; it is a new jail of steel and concrete, all new, and thus one of the largest prisons in Latin America. The cells: Completely isolated, guarded by more than 800 soldiers and police officers.
The dimensions: gigantic: the prison complex extends over 166 hectares, making it larger than 230 soccer fields. The commissioning of the XXL prison will more than double the detention capacity of the small country. And that is necessary. El Salvador is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
After a wave of murders, the president declared war on the criminal gangs. Unfortunately, this is driving up the number of prisoners. During a ten-month state of emergency, the police and army were able to arrest more than 62,000 suspected gang members and accomplices. As a result, nearly two percent of El Salvador's adult population is now behind bars - the highest incarceration rate in the world.
The rising number of prisoners has overwhelmed the country's already overburdened prison system. With this new mega-prison, the fight against criminal gangs can now continue.
