"Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep. At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years," according to a statement from his family.
Former Senator Bob Dole announced that he had stage four lung cancer in February. The Republican senator had spent 36 years on Capitol Hill. Dole was one of the most influential senators of his generation and the party's leader. A witty and calculating politician, he combined a talent for compromise with a sharp sense of humor. Though he was often critical of himself, he did not shy away from criticizing others.
A powerful force in the Senate, Bob Dole served as the Republican party's vice-presidential nominee in 1976 and the 1996 presidential nominee. While he was a veteran politician, he was wary of the Beltway. Yet, despite his aversion to politics, he was a beloved senator from both sides of the aisle.
Bob Dole retired from politics after his unsuccessful 1996 presidential bid and became an entrepreneur. In addition, he starred in a series of television commercials for Visa and Viagra. Dole was seriously wounded during World War II, but he remained dedicated to his fellow war veterans throughout his public life. He spent his Saturday meeting with veterans and greeting them in person. He also worked with the Honor Flight Network to organize flights to Washington for veteran families.
My Condolences to the Family.
