Tragic crash landing on Santa Monica's dream beach!
People enjoyed the sunset on the Pacific, and some beachgoers stood knee-deep in the salt water and enjoyed the peaceful sight. Suddenly they heard the hum of an airplane engine, then the plane crashed into the waves and overturned!
The crashed machine is upside down on Santa Monica Beach. A well-known ex-politician, Rex Minter, died in the crash landing.
A small plane crashed on the picturesque beach of Santa Monica on Thursday afternoon. Dozens of helpless beach visitors had to watch the accident and witnessed how the red and white Cessna 150 slowly lost altitude and then made an emergency landing.
On board were the pilot and Rex Minter, the former mayor of Santa Monica, California. According to the rescue workers, Minter did not survive the crash landing and died in cold Pacific waters at age 95. The men had started at the local airport and wanted to fly to Malibu together. But after a few minutes of flight, the propeller plane crashed within sight of the world-famous Santa Monica Pier.
The pilot radioed 911 about engine problems.
In a radio message to the tower that has now been published, the pilot reported technical problems, saying: "The engine is running very, very restlessly." He announced that he would land on the beach because he saw "no other chance."
Videos showed how the Cessna touched the surface of the water and only a fraction of a second later overturned. Then the machine came to rest upside down in the shallow water. Witnesses, lifeguards, firefighters, and police ran to the crash site and pulled the men out of the cabin. According to official information, one of the passengers suffered cardiac arrest, and nothing is known about the pilot's health.
Santa Monica loses Rex Minter, a former mayor who served from 1963 to 1967 before moving to Los Angeles County Superior Court. City officials and Acting Mayor Gleam Davis confirmed his death.
