Zhale Pan celebrates his Olympic victory.
DLNews Sports:
"Humanly impossible!" This Olympic world record is causing controversy!
Zhanle Pan, aged 19, has set a new world record for the 100-meter freestyle. The Chinese swimmer finished in 46.40 seconds, earning himself the title of Olympic champion. This time was four-tenths faster than his previous record, which he set in February in Doha during the World Championships.
It is too much for former Australian Olympic swimmer and current coach Brett Hawke. The 49-year-old talked himself into a rage in an Insta video.
Hawke competed for Australia at the Olympics in 2000 and 2004.
"Listen, I want to be honest. I'm angry about this swimming performance for several reasons," he begins his video.
He knows all the swimmers in the field very well, so he can make a judgment as an "expert," he explains.
Hawke: "It's not real. You don't beat these guys—Kyle Chalmers, David Popovici, Jack Alexy—by a whole-body length in the 100 freestyle. That's not humanly possible! OK?"
I am so doping allegations against the world record-holding Chinese!
Before the Chinese athletes competed in the Olympics, there was controversy surrounding athletes who had tested positive for banned substances. Specifically, 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ) in a competition at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, before the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Among them were 200-meter breaststroke world record holder Qin Haiyang, Zhang Yufei and 200-meter individual medley Olympic champion Wang Shun. Not among them is Pan Zhanle.
The Chinese said after the race about possible doping allegations: "Last year, I was tested 29 times, and I was never positive. I was tested after the race. We will see the result.”
Chalmers, whom Hawke addressed, only said, “I trust him—and the others.” This probably refers to the doping hunters.
