DLNews US Election:
The arrival of former President Donald Trump to Riverside County promises to stir a lively debate in the Coachella Valley, where his scheduled rally at Calhoun Ranch on October 12 is expected to draw both enthusiastic supporters and outspoken opposition. The event, starting at 5 p.m., with doors opening at 1 p.m., marks another attempt by Trump to energize his California base. However, his rhetoric on state issues has already raised concerns among local leaders.
The former president plans to address what his campaign describes as a challenging outlook for Californians. However, prominent Coachella Valley voices have yet to welcome the visit. Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez openly contrasted Trump's campaign style with Senator Bernie Sanders, who held a well-received rally in 2020, emphasizing that Trump’s values clash with the area's inclusive community spirit. "Trump’s attacks on immigrants, women, the LGBTQ community, and the vulnerable don’t align with our community values," Hernandez asserted.
Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz echoed these sentiments, warning that Trump’s policies could deeply harm the region. Ruiz highlighted the potential impact on local industries, including agriculture and clean energy. “His proposed tariffs could spark another trade war, costing farmers and farmworkers dearly,” Ruiz stated, criticizing Trump's stance on immigration and health care as destructive to Coachella’s economy and social fabric.
Other officials, such as Coachella City Councilman Frank Figueroa and Indio City Councilman Waymond Fermon, joined in the critique, describing Trump’s presence as a threat to the region's celebrated diversity and democracy.
Trump’s appearance follows a series of visits to Southern California this year, punctuating an active campaign trail as he prepares for a second potential term. Whether his rally will resonate or repel Coachella Valley voters remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: the former president’s divisive style will likely keep this rally a focal point for political tensions in the region.
