The 2024 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has just been announced.
This year's list of nominees includes: Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane's Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O'Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade and A Tribe Called Quest.
Of those, Carey, Cher, Foreigner, Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Kravitz, Oasis, O'Connor, Osbourne and Sade are all first time nominees.
I was especially pleased to see Frampton, Oasis and the Dave Matthews Band on the list.
The winning nominees will be announce in late April 2024.
Groundbreaking Favorites Nowhere to be found
This long-time music journalist was disappointed to see a slew of greats once again ignored by the Rock Hall. That is especially true with the reality that artist such as Cher and Carey would never be described as rock.
Power pop legends Badfinger, prog rock favorites ASIA, '70s classic rock legends Bad Company, Blue Öyster Cult, Boston and America, genre-defying great Beck, '80s alt rock pioneers The Smiths, pioneering Britpop rockers Blur, and new wave favorites The B-52's are among the long-eligible rock artists who I had hoped might be nominated this year. I had also hoped that Ten Years After - which had a score of celebrated album releases in the late 1960s and early 1970s - might finally be nominated; I also think the Monkees should have finally scored a well-deserved nod.
