All nuclear power plants will be connected to the grid for more climate neutrality!
Around 20 countries call for this at the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai. The USA, France, Great Britain, and the host country, the United Arab Emirates, are among those who have published a declaration. In it, they call for the installed capacity of nuclear power plants worldwide to be tripled by 2050.
Belgium, Finland, Japan, Poland, Sweden, and Ukraine are also signatories to the declaration, which US climate envoy John Kerry read out. But not Russia and China, which also have many nuclear power plants.
Kerry referred to statements from the scientific community according to which climate neutrality by 2050 "cannot be achieved without nuclear power." It is also essential that international financial institutions should promote the expansion of nuclear power, which is currently excluded in their statutes. Background: Critics point to the risks associated with nuclear power, unresolved waste disposal issues, and high costs.
Nuclear power currently accounts for just under ten percent of global electricity generation. The highest level was 17.5 percent in 1996.
At the climate conference, the focus is on expanding renewable energies. On Friday, more than 110 countries backed the goal of tripling their output by 2030. At the same time, energy efficiency should be doubled.
