Assassin Nikolas Cruz (24) in the courtroom in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday (November 2)
DLNews Crime:
On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz caused a bloodbath at his former school in Parkland, Florida. Equipped with a gas mask, smoke grenades, and a rifle, the then 19-year-old shot 14 teenagers and three adults. In addition, 17 other people were injured. The assassin has now been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The judge at the competent court in the state of Florida officially announced the sentence on Wednesday. Cruz, bound and in a red prison jumpsuit, watched the judge as she handed down 34 consecutive life sentences - one each for those killed and 17 wounded - for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre. The killer showed no emotion while she spoke.
Prosecutors and the victims' families had called for Cruz's death penalty, but a jury recommended life imprisonment in mid-October. The jury's decision bound the judge.
The sentencing came after the victims' parents, wives, siblings, and other relatives, as well as some of the survivors, were given two days to speak to the perpetrator themselves in the courtroom. In the emotional performances, they talked about their grief but also showed anger, disappointment, and incomprehension that Cruz was not sentenced to death.
After the massacre more than four years ago, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School launched protests against gun violence and for stricter gun laws, sparking a nationwide movement. Because the killer had legally acquired the semi-automatic rifle. In the United States, guns are still easy to get, and school shootings are common.
