Tell me more: Director Guy Ritchie ("Sherlock Holmes," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels") brought his stylish style of British filmmaking to the 2015 big budget film "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," a wonderful big screen adaptation of the beloved action-adventure NBC-TV series that ran from 1964 to 1968.
In the action-packed film actor Henry Cavill stars as CIA agent Napoleon Solo who forms a tense and uneasy alliance with KGB officer Illya Kuryakin (played by actor Armie Hammer) and the defiant daughter of a missing nuclear scientist (actress Alicia Vikander); together the unlikely trio must stop a criminal organization that threatens to fully ignite the Cold War.
The film is at once a thrilling '60s-minded spy movie and a stylish British movie presented with the punch of a Hollywood blockbuster. The visual and audio quality on the Blu-ray are outstanding, and the attention to detail that transports viewers back to the early 1960s is further bolstered by the exotic locations, a winning soundtrack composed by Daniel Pemberton and the chemistry between an especially strong cast of top-tier actors.
There are a number of great bonus features on the title of interest to fans of the film. "The Hollywood Way" features a brand new interview with co-writer/producer Lionel Wigram; this interview sheds light on the importance of the film's director and how the film successfully revisited "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." TV series but on a larger scale ideally suited for the big screen. "These were our first choices for the roles," Wigram said of the cast members.
Additionally of interest is the short "Legacy of U.N.C.L.E." which celebrates the original 1960s TV series that ran for more than 100 episodes.
The packaging includes a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Dare Creative. An illustrated collector's booklet features new writing by Barry Forshaw, and a reprinted article from CODEX Magazine on the film's cinematography.
