DLNews Education:
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. —Get ready to groove, Coachella Valley! The 2024-2025 school year is about to hit a high note as elementary students across the valley embark on a musical journey like never before. Thanks to the dynamic collaboration between the Adopt the Arts Foundation and the Palm Springs Unified School District, a brand-new pilot program brings the magic of music to our classrooms.
Who’s Behind the Beat?
Adopt the Arts, the brainchild of GRAMMY® award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame® legend Matt Sorum, along with Golden Globe® and Emmy® award-winning actor Jane Lynch, is a powerhouse non-profit dedicated to transforming elementary schools with top-tier music education. This dream team is on a mission to ensure that every child has the chance to discover their inner rock star.
Where’s the Magic Happening?
Four lucky schools – Agua Caliente, Bubbling Wells, Della S. Lindley, and Vista Del Monte – will be the first to roll out this innovative program, with more schools joining in on the fun by the second semester. And it’s not just any music program – students will dive into a world of Voice, Percussion, Keyboard, and Ukulele, all while exploring cultural traditions and enhancing their math and reading skills.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! Classrooms will be decked out with shiny new Casio keyboards and Remo drums, and students will have the unique opportunity to learn from professional musicians and industry mentors who will bring lessons to life in the most unforgettable way.
A Special Harmony
In a first for the district, talented students can audition for a multi-grade honors choir – The Changels – and showcase their skills in public performances. Talk about hitting the right note!
Why It Matters
“Music education is more than just notes and rhythms; it’s about building creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love for learning,” says Matt Sorum, Founder of Adopt the Arts. “We’re thrilled to partner with teachers, school officials, and parents to inspire the next generation of creators and thinkers in Coachella Valley.”
Dr. Tony Signoret, Superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District, couldn’t agree more. “Our district has always championed the arts; this partnership is a monumental step forward in enriching the student experience.”
