Coachella Announces Virtual Groundbreaking of Grapefruit Blvd. Project

By Desert Star Staff COACHELLA, Calif. – The City of Coachella had a groundbreaking virtual ceremony on Friday, February 5 at 8:30 am for the Grapefruit Blvd Urban Greening and Connectivity Project located on Grapefruit Blvd from Leoco Lane to 9th Street. “We are excited to be breaking ground on this significant project for our Downtown Pueblo Viejo District,” said Steven Hernandez, Mayor of the City of Coachella. “This will not only assist the City in reducing greenhouse gases via carbon sequestration but

by also providing shade to local business, thus reducing energy consumption by keeping these businesses cooler throughout the day.” Mayor Hernandez also stated, “Additionally, this area is a known flood-prone area, so by adding Bioswales with 220,000-gallon stormwater retention will go a long way when our arid landscape can absorb a monsoon or when a microburst storm occurs. So as you can see, it’s not only good for the environment, but it’s good for business too.” This $5.34M climate

Sunnylands offers condolences on passing of State George P. Shultz By Desert Star Staff RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of former Secretary of State George P. Shultz, a legendary diplomat who played a critical role in shaping U.S. foreign policy in the 20th century. Considerations when Establishing a Will

By Janice Gough Last week, I talked about the importance of establishing a Will. This week, I wish to address problems that can happen even when you have one. What If your child inherits a significant amount and they are married or if they marry later? Instead of putting that inherited money into their paycheck account, they should put it into a separate private account or a trust, depending on amount, and treat it as what is known as “separate property.” It should not be used as part of the couple’s household budget. If you do,

You are risking the problem of a unexpected divorced later. wherein the ex-spouse would have a good chance of getting half that inheritance. Even though a lot of states say inheritances are not subject to equitable distribution in a divorce. The ex-spouse will receive it simply because that money has been commingled with assets the couple had. It could be cash or a minority interest in a family business. Most people know that the No. 1 predator reaching for an inheritance is a potentially the divorcing spouse. What could happen if you do not get along with your child and do not leave them anything? You could write, “I’ve made no provision for Alice, because we’re estranged.” But this will not resolve the issue. Even though the child has no right to receive an inheritance, they usually have the right to drag out litigation involving probate of the will. They have a certain standing to claim that the will was not validly executed or that it was procured through the undue influence of someone else or fraud. You have followed the law, but because your child has this special standing, they can essentially shake down your estate and get something anyway. It may cost the estate more than gifting to them. When you have a child who has mental issues, having a trust for them or for any descendant who is categorized as a “spend thrift” case( a person who does not manage money well) will enable you to provide for their needs without opening an entire inheritance to them at one time. These people are vulnerable to people who would take advantage of them. Whereas, a trust can be managed and paid out according to your wishes. What if this child becomes

aware that their “stable” brother or sister is getting their money outright versus theirs being held in a trust? The parent should leave a letter (pre-death) which explains this situation to the child or better yet, write a letter that I can deliver to them after the parent dies. A private document can take away the sting or shock. If the decedent has, say two children, and the will says that the inheritance is to be unequally divided, the child that will receive less might claim the will was procured through undue influence, which might work. Even if it doesn’t, they can force the estate to incur all that litigation expense and delay. They may end up getting an equal percentage anyway. What if a parent’s will stipulates that their adult child’s inheritance of say, $5 million, can be passed on only to blood relatives and that there’s a bank co-trustee? Can that be overturned? They probably have no recourse because they had no right under the law to receive anything at all. However, once the money is in the child’s hands, it is their money to do what they want with it. If you are a parent that is going to use a trust in your estate plan, you want to put restrictions on how much can come out and for what purpose. Details really matter when you are talking about a substantial inheritance. Some heirs are shocked at how much money is in their parents’ estates, which they have now inherited. Should the parent have prepared them for this? If things are harmonious, it is advisable to have conversations with your adult children, so they can get a pretty good understanding of your estate plan. What if the parent is concerned that their child might not be motivated to be

work if they’ become aware that they’re getting a big inheritance? A lot of people who did not come from money, but earned millions may desire their children to get job experience and contribute to society in a meaningful way. Normally they create trusts for their children, where an independent trustee decides when and how much is to come out of the trust. What if an aggrieved child claims their parent’s will is invalid and gets it thrown out? Can the estate do anything about that? The law says if the most recent will is thrown out, you must go back to the will that was written before the new one. When you update your will, you can modify it in only some minor way, like changing a successor trustee. However, most things stay unchanged.

Update your will every year or couple of years because in the above scenario, the child would have to go through every single one of the wills to benefit from their litigation. This can fend off litigation more successfully than almost anything else. The most shocking things about wills and trust is that a lot of people do not have one. Everyone needs to have a will because the issue is: What happens if you don-not have one? Janice Gough is a Financial Consultant located at 471 E. Tahquitz Cyn.Way in Palm Springs. Campaign Spotlights Women’s Top Killer: Heart Disease

By Desert Star Staff Heart disease is women’s number one health threat, and the American Heart Association is raising awareness of the alarming fact with its DC Go Red campaign. The program encourages women in Washington, D.C. and Virginia to take an active role in their health, as well as that of those they love. Jill Feldon, vice president of strategy communications for Kaiser Permanente, which is co-sponsoring the Greater Washington campaign, said too many women, particularly young women of color, are unaware of the dangers of cardiovascular disease, which kills one in three Black and Caucasian women in the nation. She thinks the campaign

is timely because heart disease has killed more people in 2020 than COVID-19. “The pandemic has created a lot of stress for people, which has an impact on people’s heart health,” Feldon explained. “So it’s really important to get the message out about keeping your heart healthy, what you can do to prevent cardiovascular disease, and to definitely talk to your doctor about any hard questions that you may have.” National Wear Red Day on Friday, part of the Association’s February Heart Month focus, also asks folks to wear red and download resources to help eradicate heart disease and stroke. For more information and to make donations, go to DCGoRed.Heart.org. Feldon noted some ways February 10, 2021

women can stay heart healthy are to pay attention to risk factors in their cholesterol, blood sugar and weight numbers. They should also talk to their doctors about any family history of cardiovascular disease. “A second thing you can do is certainly make healthy lifestyle choices, move more, eat smart and manage your blood pressure,” Feldon outlined. “These things are in

some ways kind of small, but the small things can really add up and make a big difference in terms of how you live.” About 6% of Virginians live with a variety of cardiovascular disease, according to the Virginia Department of Health. In 2017, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data showed heart disease was the second leading cause of death in the Commonwealth, killing almost 15,000 people.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Everything concerning daily life is re-evaluated. Review all plans each day, assess the condition of all people, places and environments around you. Consider what ways you want to change and adapt to make life more orderly and pleasant. You realize you must think differently now on how to bring forth more beauty and perfection. Careful communication is needed with coworkers. Also assess the state of your health, diet, exercise and how you awaken bright and early each day.

TAURUS Interesting situations and communication may occur with lovers, children, and your own sense of creativity. Tend carefully and with great detail to your health. Issues not yet resolved in relationships will reappear. Try to listen to the core message of all communications. Don’t react or defend. These destroy. Unresolved issues must be dealt with or there will be a dissolving and dissolution of important connections in the future. Respond to everything and everyone with care.

GEMINI Everything about home, family, early life, mother, real estate, things domestic, comes into focus and will need careful evaluation and reconsideration. Make no important decisions unless an emergency occurs. Remember everyone everywhere is experiencing the present astrological transits. And everyone is

experiencing them differently. Use your Gemini mind and heart to observe and discern the differences. You remember to be nonjudgmental, non-critical and loving (your purpose).

CANCER Cancer (sign of the crab) always circles a situation, entering the center from every direction. They do not walk a direct line to anything for they are always wary of prey. Thus, they have a very developed intuition. In the next three weeks that intuition will take on a different tone and focus. Care needs to be taken with communication, thinking, writing and driving. Something from the past reappears. Be aware of forgetfulness. In the meantime, make home beautiful, as if it’s a secret garden.

LEO Do not create any shifts or waves in your financial picture. No loans (given or applied for), for example. Take this time to review finances, create new budgets (to be applied after three weeks), assess the flow of money (what’s coming in, what’s going out, its usefulness), the hows and whys of these transactions and review if everything monetary is proceeding as planned. Include a review of precious metals, your values. And tithe.

VIRGO Are you feeling somewhat distant and unable to communicate feelings? Are others saying you’re difficult

and distant? During this time, you’re very internally focused, assessing all aspects of yourself – who you are, why you are, what your values are, your everyday actions, whom you’re with and why. You review previous choices, asking if they reflect your present wants, hopes, wishes and needs. Hold on. Things change within the month.

LIBRA Thoughts, ideas, beliefs, decisions and issues not tended to for a long time appear in the present, seeking attention and needing reassessment. Much of your communication may not be heard or understood by others. Therefore, try to be very clear when communicating, speak slowly, and most of all listen well. Listen with the heart. Be non-judgmental, call forth compassion, retreat for a while. This retrograde for you is a time of deep quiet, prayer and understanding forgiveness. Be a new era person, a “loving understanding.”

SCORPIO With friends and in groups, all plans may be delayed, changed or not happen at all. Those close to you may seem distant (remember everyone’s internal during retrogrades), quiet or confused. Some though, may talk endlessly. Friends, places, ideas from the past make contact and you consider returning somewhere, to a place, a group, an idea, ideal or to friendships from long ago. Allow no heartache or anguish

It seems like every subject is sensitive. During these critical times of change, we stand in the burning grounds, being tested. Say over and over, “Don’t worry. ‘Bridgerton’--A British Period Piece From Netflix TV’s period drama “Bridgerton” is set in the Regency period of British history (1811-1820). Mad King George sits on the throne, and in this romantic concoction, love has social rules and marriages are arranged. However, this does not suit the lovely Daphne, eldest daughter of Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), who has eight children who must eventually marry. To her mother’s dismay, feisty Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) is determined to wed for love, not money. Good luck with that. Daphne is pursued by countless suitors she finds unsuitable. To keep from being betrothed to any one of them, she makes a pact with

the very handsome Simon, Duke of Hastings (Rege Jean Page). They pretend to be courting one another until she finds the man of her dreams. However, as time goes by, she finds herself falling in love with him. It is evident that he, too, has feelings for her, but they will, unfortunately, go unexpressed. But why? This is a question that will eventually be answered for us all watching--and for the lovely Daphne as well. “Bridgerton,” created by Chris Van Dusen, is based on the romance novels of Julia Quinn. It is narrated by Julie Andrews and is great fun. It’s available to Netflix members. Enjoy!

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Chad Hartigan’s “Little Fish” – A Tender Love Story During Challenging Times

Jude’ (Jack O’Connell) and ‘Emma’ (Olivia Cooke) in their happier days. Photo: Courtesy of IFC Films They say that timing is one of the keys to success in any given industry or endeavor or even in a relationship. Because the world is struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic, in the case of LITTLE FISH, the release timing couldn’t be more illconceived. Thus, I gave a great deal of thought before deciding to review this motion picture. The reason? Set some time in the future, this fascinating film, screenplay by Mattson Tomlin, based on a short story by Aja Gabel, is brilliantly directed by Chad Hartigan, who, working in concert with cinematographer Sean McElwee, meticulously captures the moment-tomoment exploration of a different pandemic and the accompanying impact on one particular couple. An apocalypse can be instantaneous with rapid, violent manifestations. Still, in contrast, LITTLE FISH is the story of a slow-moving, quiet cataclysm affecting couples who wake up not knowing each other, mothers who forget to pick up their children from school or planes that are grounded for fear the pilots will forget how to land their aircraft. Beyond the apocalyptic aspect, this is basically a

love story taking place during a worldwide pandemic. Director Hartigan elicited two extraordinary performances from Olivia Cooke, who plays Emma, and Jack O’Connell, who plays her husband, Jude. Through the cinematic voice-over device, Emma poignantly tells the story of their relationship, which begins with her holding her dog and a man, who will eventually become her husband, asking, “Is that your dog?” A question that is asked again at a later time. Through a series of flashbacks, their story is unraveled. Sometimes when this method is used, instead of clarification, it causes confusion and wondering where the heck you are in the narrative. In this case, however, I’ve seldom seen that device used more efficiently and with crystal clear clarity. You never have to guess where you are as the non-linear timeline unfolds. Emma is a veterinary technician, and Jude is a photographer shooting rock shows and weddings. He is rarely without a camera in his hand, documenting ordinary, everyday occurrences. Bear in mind the story zig-zags back and forth from the presence to the past. Now they are married

and have a rescue dog named Blue. On a bus one day, Emma hears loudspeakers asking about lost people, and we slowly begin to understand that there is something amiss with memories. People are clamoring to be part of a clinical trial that hopefully will come up with a cure for an escalating disorder called Neuroinflammatory Affliction (NIA), a rapidly downward spiraling Alzheimer’slike condition causing one’s memory to vanish – ranging from weeks or months or sometimes instantly. It’s easy to take notice that Jude, whose memory is beginning to falter, has plastered the walls of their apartment with a variety of photographs serving as documentation of people, places, and experiences. As luck would have it, Jude is selected to sign up to participate in an upcoming trial, which involves invasive brain surgery. He is seated inside a clinic where everyone is wearing a mask. However, I should point out that unlike the contagious COVID-19, the mythical NIA is not transmissible. Jude tries to fill out the questionnaire, but there are sections he cannot answer. To memorialize Jude’s journey into darkness, Emma makes daily entries in her journal, keeping track of her husband’s behavioral changes and tries to joggle his memory by asking questions about their relationship. She asks Jude if there’s one thing that stands out in his memory, and he slowly answers that he remembers being in a pet store and buying a fish. The fog temporarily lifts, and he recalls that he proposed to her in a pet store, apologizing that he didn’t have an engagement ring. “Buy me a fish instead,” and so he did. Jude’s best friend is Ben, a successful musician wonderfully played by Raúl Castillo. He had been touring around the country, but unfortunately, he is smack in the middle of exhibiting the tell-tale, sometimes violent disease symptoms, which scares his wife Samantha or Sam, compassionately played by Soko. Jude takes him to a tattoo parlor and has Ben’s name etched into the chest. In any case, as his friend’s condition worsens, so does Jude’s. Emma writes in her journal, “He’s losing pieces of himself.” Holding a kitchen

knife in a threatening manner, Emma is faced with her husband potentially stabbing her. “The man I was supposed to love forever just tried to stab me.” Emma doesn’t give up on him. Trying to bring back his memory, she quizzes him daily, “Where did we meet? When did we get married? Was it in a church? What’s the name of our dog? He has a vague recollection of kissing her on the steps of a church. Slowly, more and more of his memories are slipping away. In the act of desperation, Emma decides to use one of the drugs used on dogs to see if she can bring back his vanishing life. Although the outcome is questionable, in a moment of lucidity, “Before I’m all gone,” he tells her, “You are the love of my life.” There are further unexpected twists that would fall under “spoiler,” so I shall not reveal the other surprising elements. Although this is movie-making at its finest, the storyline might be complicated for people who have family members who are actually dealing with progressive disease. The decision to see or not to see is your dear reader. Make a Statement: 3 Comfortable Yet Stylish Shoe Trends to Try in 2021

Try on-trend looks like the Nike Court Vision in metallic accents and fun colors. By Desert Star Staff While comfort will continue to reign supreme for clothing and accessories in 2021, when it comes to footwear, there are a variety of fun fashion trends that make a statement. The good

news is that there’s no need to overhaul your entire closet. And it’s easier than ever to incorporate on-trend pieces into a comfortable and casual outfit. According to Alyson Stanley, buyer for national retailer Rack

Room Shoes, simple clothing choices paired with shoes featuring leopard print detailing, pops of pastel, or silver accents make getting dressed easy and fun. Whether walking around the neighborhood, enjoying

By Desert Star Staff Trying out online dating for the first time or frustrated by the experience? Below are five online dating tips from Andrea McGinty, premier dating expert and founder of 33 Thousand Dates, a coaching platform designed to help millennial and Gen X women and men navigate online dating. In her 20+ years as a matchmaker, McGinty arranged over 33,000 dates, so it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about dating successfully! 1. Enlist help. With over 104 million singles in America and over 30 million dating online, your online dating profile needs to stand out. A dating expert can help you craft a

profile you’re proud of – and one that isn’t full of clichés like “long walks on the beach.” You hire professionals to help you exercise, clean and shop, so why not hire a dating pro to help reflect your individuality? At 33 Thousand Dates, for example, they take a personalized, proactive approach and handle the heavy lifting so that clients can have all the fun. 2. Refresh your photos. Time to cull from the thousands of photos saved on your phone for five to 10 terrific shots. If they’re more than a year old or low-resolution, consider scheduling a photoshoot with a friend or a professional. Pose in natural light, ideally outdoors, and show off your smile. Avoid

selfies and sunglasses, and include at least one full body shot that conveys your interests, whether you’re hiking, doing a tree pose, or walking along the shore. For men, shirts on unless it’s a great surf shot or you’re spiking a volleyball on the beach. Lastly, most photos should be solo – pets are warm and welcoming, but limit the shots including friends or family. 3. Be proactive. Start with only one or two dating platforms. You can add more later, but you don’t want to be overwhelmed by all the “likes” you’ll receive! Once live, don’t wait for messages to bombard you. Instead, use the platform’s filters so you see the type of people you’re looking for – don’t be shy

a socially-distanced event, or leading a Zoom meeting, here are some tips on how to stay cozy and on-trend this year. Animal Prints: In the past, mixing patterns was taboo, but according to Stanley, it’s now encouraged. Sneakers, clogs, and casual shoes with animal print accents serve as a neutral accessory that can be mixed and paired with any item in the closet. Nike’s Court Vision Low Sneaker puts a fun twist on cheetah print accents, while the adidas Puremotion Adapt is a stylish slip-on sneaker with a crisscross leopard print pattern. Metallic Accents: Athletic shoes featuring a hint of shine or iridescent details provide a versatile option for those getting their steps in or committing to fitness goals. Because metallics such as rose gold, silver, and gold can mesh with a broad range of color palettes and design styles, they are “the new neutral.” For those on-the-go, athletic shoes such as the Nike Swift 2 and the Nike Court Vision are selections that offer a touch of

silver, gold, or platinum detailing. Joyful Pastels and Playful Patterns: This season’s footwear features a palette of cotton candy-inspired shades (think lavender, mint green, and bubblegum pink). The possibilities to incorporate these colors into this season’s outfits are limitless. While you may know Crocs’ classic clogs are surprisingly comfortable and functional, you may not be aware that they now come in many pastel-colored options such as mint, lilac, and a pattern featuring a baby blue shade swirled with cloud forms. For all your family’s footwear needs, visit rackroomshoes. com for online shopping or curbside pickup options. “Though many of us are still spending the majority of the day working, exercising, and taking classes online from home, clothing and accessories still afford us the opportunity to express our unique style,” says Stanley. “The patterns and color trends for shoes in 2021 can bring joy to everyday outfits for the entire family.” StatePoint

about knowing what you want! “After coaching thousands of people and playing a part in 4,200 marriages, I’ve found that those with the highest level of dating success proactively work the system in person and online,” says McGinty. 4. Arrange video chats. Set up short virtual dates to determine whether you’re willing to meet in person. Keep conversations to 10 minutes – this is enough time to get a feel for personality, looks and mannerisms. Ask important questions early to ensure your values align, and remember, chemistry only comes in person! 5. Have fun. Now it’s time for the good stuff! Arrange drinks, coffee or brunch al fresco

– these dates are less pressure, more relaxed and don’t drag on. If you’re ready to leave, say you have errands to run or evening plans. A coach can help with this part, too – 33 Thousand Dates offers expert advice on how to communicate and follow up on dates. Keep in mind, you’re seeing if you like the person enough to go on a second date, not marry them! And if it doesn’t go well, those millions of other singles are waiting to meet you. For more tips and to learn more about enlisting help from pros, visit 33000dates.com. Don’t continue to tread water. Take proactive steps now to date online with confidence. StatePoint

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is still compiling its final data for 2020, but through Nov. 19, there were more than 1,300 marijuana-involved traffic crashes, a 1.2% increase from all of 2019. Bighorn Grant Enables Desert Arc Clients to Participate in Community Activities

By Madeline Zuckerman Desert Arc, well-known for its stellar 60 plus year history, is the only area nonprofit providing comprehensive services for approximately 730 adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities within the Coachella Valley and the Morongo Basin. All clients of Desert Arc are independent adults with disabilities. Desert Arc was awarded a $10,000 grant by BIGHORN Cares in 2020, which has enabled Desert Arc to purchase a 2020 Transit 150 Van, with a seating capacity of 8 people. Desert Arc is planning to acquire a fleet of these eight-passenger vans to meet the need to transport and integrate smaller groups of their clients into communitybased settings. Enabling people with disabilities to participate more fully in activities outside of Desert Arc’s program sites. This grant’s significance means that clients of Desert Arc, who have historically spent time in the work activity workshops or the adult day center, will spend the majority of their time within the

community post-pandemic, per the new directives of the various regulatory agencies. “Desert Arc is grateful for the generous support of BIGHORN Cares and for their belief in our mission to enhance the quality of life and create opportunities for people with disabilities,” stated Richard Balocco, President/CEO of Desert Arc. Enter BIGHORN Cares, the philanthropy arm of BIGHORN Golf Club in Palm Desert, California. Through BIGHORN Cares, its Club members donated more than $600,000 last year to worthy Coachella Valley nonprofits. BIGHORN Cares was created to assist other 501(c)(3) organizations by issuing grants for specific projects that benefit the most underserved citizens within the Coachella Valley. In true BIGHORN fashion, this organization is supported by member contributions and a partnership with One West Bank, with 100% of the funds passed through to qualified applicants. Over the past five years, BIGHORN Cares

has distributed $2.4 million to 332 nonprofits, benefiting the lives of countless adults, children, and families. “BIGHORN Cares is proud to create community building within the Coachella Valley,” stated Kelly Levy, Marketing and Charities Director for BIGHORN Golf Club. “Last

year, due to BIGHORN member donations, over 100,000 lives were changed and millions of miracles created. By supporting Desert Arc and providing a vehicle like this, it is allowing more people with disabilities the opportunity to participate and connect with the broader community.

It is remarkable to see the benefits these programs provide for future foundations and success. It is an honor to represent BIGHORN members, who make a difference and create a positive impact within the community.” Visit the Desert Arc website at www.desertarc.org.
