DLNews Ukraine War:
US President Joe Biden (80) and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyj (45) demonstrated great unity on Thursday - and concealed an excellent disappointment for Ukraine.
The USA hesitated long ago about delivering these missiles because Ukraine could theoretically hit targets in Russia.
As was previously known, the new aid package for Ukraine did not contain any ATACMS missiles, which Ukraine had urgently requested.
BUT: According to consistent media reports, the USA now supplies short-range missiles!
During his visit to Washington, Biden promised Zelensky that the USA would deliver a small number of ATACMS. This is reported by the US broadcaster NBC News and the Washington Post, citing US officials.
After Zelensky's visit, the US Department of Defense listed the military goods it supplies to Ukraine as part of a new $325 million aid package. ATACMS missiles were not included. Ukraine has long been demanding longer-range weapon systems, such as the ATACMS short-range missiles from the USA and the Taurus cruise missiles from Germany.
That's why the Ukrainians need these missiles.
The ATACMS missiles are short-range ballistic missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers and can reach their target within five minutes. They are intended to make Russian troop movements impossible.
Unlike the British Storm Shadow missiles, which Ukraine uses to hit immobile targets such as command centers in Crimea, if a drone detects Russian troop movements, it can send its data to the HIMARS units within seconds. There, a Ukrainian soldier only has to enter the GPS data of the target and hit the units.
Storm Shadow missiles, conversely, are cruise missiles that fly at subsonic speeds and very low. They take significantly longer to hit their target.
