DLNews Staff:
After the horrific attack on the LGBT hangout "Club Q," the Colorado Springs police released the names of the five people who died on Monday.
Bartenders Derrick Rump and Daniel Aston were killed in the attack. The other three victims are guests Kelly Loving, Ashley Paugh (mother of an 11-year-old daughter), and Raymond Green Vance.
Flashback: On Saturday night Anderson Lee Aldrich (22) stormed the queer club in Colorado Springs (US state Colorado) with an assault rifle and a handgun and apparently shot five people at random - 25 party guests were injured in the rampage. Some of the wounded are still in mortal danger.
The attack happened on the night of this year's Transgender Day of Remembrance, the annual memorial day for the victims of transphobic violence. In the past 12 months, 327 murders of transgender people were officially registered worldwide - the number of unreported cases will be far higher. With the bartender of "Club Q," Daniel Aston, and the trans woman Kelly Loving († 40), two more victims are added.
Daniel Aston († 28)
Bartender Daniel Aston, a 28-year-old trans man from Tulsa, moved to Colorado Springs two years ago and has worked as a nightclub and behind-the-bar entertainer. His parents told the AP that their son "brightened every room" and "always smiled, was always happy and silly."
Raymond Green Vance
"On November 19th, 2022, Raymond Green Vance went to Club Q to enjoy a show with his longtime girlfriend, her parents, and her parents' friends; they were celebrating a birthday. The 22-year-old had never been to that nightclub before, and although he is supportive of the LGBTQ community, he is not a member of it. But, unfortunately, he never left the club.
Kelly Loving († 40)
Trans woman Kelly Loving († 40) was also identified as one of the five victims. Kelly's sister told the New York Times that the FBI informed her of her death on Sunday. Kelly was known for being "kind and caring to those around her": "She was loving and always tried to help the next person instead of thinking about herself. I was very close to her."
Ashley Paugh († 35)
Ashley is survived by an 11-year-old daughter and her husband, Kurt Paugh. He told KKTV 11 News: "We are absolutely devastated by the loss of Ashley. She meant everything to this family, and we can't even begin to understand what it will be like not having her in our lives."
Derrick Rump († 38)
Derrick Rump († 38) was the good soul in "Club Q" and was very popular with the regulars. Friends say you could already hear from the parking lot whether he was working in the evening. He played Britney Spears songs most nights. So when they heard "Toxic" or "...Baby One More Time," they knew Rump was behind the bar and the night would be good. Rump was seen as the glue that held the queer community in Colorado Springs together. First, he bought eyelashes and outfits for drag queens who couldn't afford them. Then, during the corona pandemic, when all drag queens lost their jobs, he paid for their groceries for two months.
HE overpowered the killer.
Raymond, 22, was at the popular LGBT club with his partner Kassy Fierro and her parents to celebrate a friend's birthday.
It was Kassy's father, former US soldier Richard Fierro, who, together with another person, was able to overpower the assassin.
Fierro told The New York Times that he grabbed the gunman from behind, took the gun from him, and then repeatedly hit him in the head with it: "I don't know exactly what I did, I just went into combat mode ' he recalls the awful seconds. And further: "I just know I have to kill this guy before he kills us."
John Suthers, the local mayor on the courageous man: "I have never met a person who acted so heroically and was so humble."
"You saved my life."
According to eyewitnesses, the killer known to the police immediately started shooting, after which some guests intervened. Bartender Michael Anderson reported they punched and kicked the perpetrator, preventing him from "doing any more damage." He says, "You saved my life."
Regular guest Joshua Thurman to reporters: "It was scary. Corpses lay on the ground. There was broken glass, broken cups, people crying.”
The killer is currently in the hospital.
According to the district attorney, the perpetrator is hospitalized and will make his first court appearance in the coming days. The US radio station "KRDO" spoke of one of the most extensive police operations in the history of Colorado Springs.
The police emphasized that after the first call came in three minutes before midnight, the suspect was taken into custody at 00.02 a.m
“Yet this happens far too often. We must eliminate the injustices that contribute to violence against LGBTQI+ people. We cannot and must not condone hatred. US President Joe Biden”
First Lady Jill Biden (here with her grandson Beau Bide) said: "It really hurts our hearts."
In his statement, President Biden also recalled that earlier this year, he signed the "most important gun safety law in almost three decades." However, that is not enough. "We must ban assault weapons from banning weapons of war from America's streets."
