Donald Trump, here on Tuesday evening in Mar-a-Lago, wants to run for the 2024 US presidential election.
DLNews Politics:
Former US President Donald Trump (76) wants to run again for the Republicans in the 2024 presidential election.
The relevant form for the 2024 US presidential election was submitted to the US Election Commission on Tuesday, as seen on the authority's website. The ex-president had previously promised a "big announcement."
Shortly after the documents were filed, Trump gave a speech to his supporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in the state of Florida on Tuesday evening. "To make America great and glorious again, tonight I announce my candidacy for president of the United States," Trump said.
"America's comeback begins right now," he continued. "Two years ago, we were a great nation, and soon we will be a great nation again."
Trump previously sat in the White House in Washington for four years from 2017 until early 2021. He lost the November 2020 election to Joe Biden.
His announcement comes just a week after the legislative and gubernatorial elections in the US, in which the Republicans, contrary to expectations, did not win a spectacular victory. Trump, who interfered vociferously in the election campaign and publicly supported numerous right-wing candidates, is held partly responsible for the poor result. Ultimately, Trump will have to compete in internal party primaries to enter the race as his party's official candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
His biggest competitor: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (44). He was confirmed in the office with a strong showing in the midterm elections. DeSantis holds similar hardline positions but appears less strident in his outward presentation.
Other Republicans could also venture a candidacy. For example, Trump's Vice President Mike Pence said he was considering a run and would be willing to run against his former boss. And Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin could also put himself in play as a candidate.
